Chronic pain is bodily pain occurring for at least 6 months; the pain is severe enough to affect daily functioning and relationships. While acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself, chronic pain persists. Pain signals keep firing in the nervous system for weeks, months, even years. There may have been an initial mishap -- sprained back, serious infection, or there may be an ongoing cause of pain -- arthritis, cancer, ear infection, but some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage.
Common chronic pain complaints include headache, low back pain, neck and upper back pain, pelvic and abdominal pain.
Physical therapy can help by restoring ideal muscle balance around the affected areas and by use of modalities to reduce pain. Techniques that are used may include manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercise and postural counseling. Our Pilates classes taught by Sarah Hudelson, PT, are also a useful adjunct to improve muscle balance in the core and globally.
Behavioral therapy can also help by educating the patient regarding strategies to help change some physical and emotional behavior that may be perpetuating the pain.
We encourage a multi-disciplinary team approach to chronic pain to address the many physical, emotional and sociological impacts affecting these conditions.
